Amidst the climate change taking place in Iraq, MALIK FAISAL, an Iraqi Kurdish citizen from Erbil Governorate in Iraqi Kurdistan, succeeded in transforming his garden into a small forest, in which he resorts with his family and guests daily to escape the high temperatures.

MALIK FAISAL, a citizen, said: “My first goal in establishing this garden is to build a healthy environment for my family, my neighbors and my country, because the environment is very important and without the environment there is no life. My motto, when it comes to planting and gardening, is to plant fruitful or aromatic trees but all provide a healthy environment. I look for plants everywhere and plant what I find that is good for health and the environment.”

Despite the lack of water and the high temperatures, the plants of FAISAL’s garden maintain their freshness and green color, as he is keen to adapt the plants of his garden by using small amounts of water in traditional ways.

FAISAL added: “I water the plants with a small cup of water so that the plant can benefit from the soil and resist heat through this small amount of water. Too much water weakens the plant and prevents its growth. Many people tell me that they spend double amounts of water than I spend, but their gardens are not lush. The reason is that I have succeeded in maintaining a balance in water consumption.”

FAISAL has been working for more than 6 years to establish this small forest, which, in addition to flowers and ornamental plants, embraces fruit trees and aromatic plants, including rare foreign varieties, which he succeeded in cultivating in Iraq in order to preserve environmental diversity.
