A State Department spokesperson told Al Jazeera that the United States is aware of reports of Iran launching a missile into space, stressing that his country is concerned about Tehran’s development of space launch vehicles, and that this raises concerns related to limiting the spread of weapons.
The spokesman added that the space launch vehicles include technologies used in ballistic missiles, including long-range, noting that Iranian missile launches are inconsistent with UN Security Council Resolution 2231.
He stressed that the United States continues to use all nonproliferation tools to prevent Iran from making further progress in its missile programs, and urged other countries to take steps to address Iran’s missile development activities.
Yesterday, Thursday, the Iranian Ministry of Defense announced the launch of 3 scientific and research devices into space on board the “Simorgh” missile intended for transmitting satellites.
Ahmed Hosseini, a spokesman for the Ministry of Defense’s Outer Space Force, said that the three devices were placed in outer space orbit simultaneously, with a launch speed of more than 7 kilometers per second.
Hosseini added that the launch process achieved all the targeted scientific and research goals, in accordance with the tasks assigned to this carrier missile
